Haven’t been much in the mood to post lately. We have some sad news to share. On Tuesday evening my sweet Grandmother Virginia passed away after a few weeks of being in and out of the hospital. She lived a beautiful life and made it to an impressive 90 years. She always seemed so spry and happy, even in the throes of her last few weeks with us and facing what was ultimately congestive heart failure. I guess that’s part of why I’m still in shock. She seemed so young and in such great shape. No one would ever guess her age.
I am very grateful for all the years we had with her and that she was able to be there for so many of my big moments in life. She was there for my high school and college graduations, my birthdays, my wedding and most importantly she was able to meet Stella. In fact, she had a big part in the naming of Stella. We were debating between two family names Grace and Stella. Grandma knew both women very well and told me that Stella was one of the smartest women she had ever known while Grace was the nicest. Smart seemed to be the right direction and so that tipped the scales for Stella. I do think Grandma was always pleased we chose that name. She adored her three great grand-daughters and seeing her laugh and enjoy them was wonderful to take in.
The last night we saw her, Stella, my Mom and I stopped by her house with some flowers and a few breakfast foods and juices and got to have a sweet short visit with her. I will cherish the memory always. Stella picked out a bouquet of pink flowers and she handed them to her “Grandma D” as she opened the door. Stella sang a few songs for her including her ABC’s and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. As we left I gave her a kiss and a hug and said I wanted to thank her, because of her we all were here and I had my Stella. I said it was a good thing she thought Grandpa Bruce was cute all those years ago. She laughed. That is how I want to remember her, laughing and calling me sweetie. I will miss her so much. Here are a few of my favorite, mostly recent pictures.
Eating: Okay this is more of a drinking thing. But we got a Nespresso Machine a few months ago and I can say I am officially hooked. I’ve always been a big latte fan and now I can make good ones every morning at home. Coffee is essential to my morning routine, sometimes I literally drift off to sleep thinking about having a cup of coffee in the morning. Yes, addicted. What does Stella dream about? I wonder.
Reading: Just finished A Tree Grows in Brooklyn for book club Tuesday night. I absolutely loved the book and was sad to finish it. So many good things to discuss.
Watching: A few good things lately. I watched the Australian mini series The Slap and it was good, though tedious. The American version debuts soon too, so going to watch and compare. Also been enjoying Transparent, I’m about 5 episodes in, also tedious. Saw the Wedding Ringer….. actually in the theaters over the weekend with my Sister and some friends, we laughed so hard, plus it was not the least bit tedious. Stella has been pretty obsessed with Peppa Pig, a quirky British cartoon. So much so, we got her a Peppa Pig shirt, which she loves.
Loving: These three and their commitment to Sparkle Motion. No one could ever doubt it. Stella is taking her first official ballet class this afternoon. Very excited.
Struggling with: Potty training, sleep training and sharing. Stella has been ascribing to the two steps forward, one step back method for growing up. Ultimately that’s great progress. Though, I could do with fewer tantrums and straight up refusing to cooperate. The Princess Tiana shoes pictured below were the source of a major scene at a Baby Shower last week.
Celebrating: Stella has been in preschool for 100 days! Not literally, but it’s been 100 days since she started. They had a fun party to celebrate. I have to say we are super-thrilled with how it’s going. She really seems to be thriving and loving school, especially her teachers and friends. She recently surprised us with her rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance, she butchered the words a bit, but her cadence is perfect…..”with liberty and justice frog”. Too damn cute. They recite it every morning to start the school day. Here she is grocery shopping in her “100 Days” hat and necklace.
Hoping: Everything is okay with my sweet Grandmother Virginia. My Mom just called to tell me she is in the hospital as I am working on this blog post. She is such a wonderful, loving Grand and Great-Grandmother. I love this picture of her with Stella.
